The award is granted each year to talented students, promising young scientists, and university teachers from important science and technology universities and academic institutions throughout the Czech Republic. The competition is organised by the Czech branch of Siemens in cooperation with Czech top universities and the Academy of Sciences of the Czech Republic, under the patronage of the Minister of Education, Youth and Sports and the Minister of Industry and Trade of the Czech Republic.
The award for the best dissertation went to Karel Lemr, an assistant professor at the Joint Laboratory of Optics of Palacký University in Olomouc and the Institute of Physics of the Academy of Sciences of the Czech Republic; his tutor, docent Jan Soubusta, was also awarded.
